Panchakarma is the ultimate mind-body healing experience for detoxifying the body, strengthening the immune system, and restoring balance and well-being. It is one the most effective healing modality in Ayurvedic Medicine. It promotes Detoxification and Rejuvenation. It is recommended on a seasonal basis, as well as when an individual feels out of balance or is experiencing illness. panchkPanchaKarma – Rejuvenating Detox Panchakarma is a Sanskrit word that means “five actions” or “five treatments”. This is a process used to clean the body of toxic materials left by disease and poor nutrition. Normally the body has the innate ability to efficiently process and remove these waste materials, including the vitiated doshas. However due to one’s repeated dietary indiscretions, poor exercise patterns, lifestyle, and genetic predisposition the digestive enzymes, metabolic co-factors, hormones, and agnis which regulate the body’s internal homeostasis become disorganized. This can lead to the accumulation and spread of toxins throughout the physiology resulting in disease. This waste matter is called ama in Ayurveda. Ama is a foul-smelling, sticky, harmful substance that needs to be completely evacuated from the body. Panchakarma will remove the excess doshas and correct imbalances in them as well as eliminate the harmful ama out of your system through the body’s own organs and channels of elimination (colon, sweat glands, lungs, bladder, urinary tract, stomach, intestines, etc). Panchakarma purifies the tissues at a very deep level. It involves daily massages and oil baths, herbal enemas, nasal administrations. It is a very pleasurable experience. Ayurveda recommends Panchakarma as a seasonal treatment for maintaining mental and physical hygiene and balance. Panchakarma is a five-fold therapy; it is highly individualized based on the needs of the individual depending on the Ayurvedic constitutional type, doshic imbalances, age, digestive strength, immune status, and many other factors. Depending on each individual’s needs all or only parts of the five therapies are utilized. Specially trained therapists must administer these procedures in a definite sequence for a specified period of time. In addition, although Panchakarma is for the most part a delightful and comfortable therapy, there can be periods of discomfort associated with the profound release of toxins, which does occur. It is therefore essential that a knowledgeable expert who can recognize the signs of properly and improperly administered Panchakarma supervise the therapy. Fortunately these signs were meticulously recorded by the ancient vaidyas. Like all medical procedures, Panchakarma Therapy always must begin with an initial consultation by a qualified Ayurvedic Physician who can determine the individual’s prakriti (constitutional type), the nature of the health problem (if any), and the appropriate degree of intensity of the prescribed therapies. Panchakarma treatments have been shown to create measurable brain wave coherence and to lower metabolic activity. They allow the body and mind to drop into a profound level of peacefulness. In this state of relaxation, it is possible to cleanse toxins from tissues as well as to release deeply held emotional tensions.

Our Natural State According to Ayurveda, our natural state is one of health, happiness and an inner sense of well-being. Health is defined as the body being clear of toxins, the mind is at peace, emotions are calm and happy, wastes are efficiently eliminated and organs are functioning normally. In a busy, stressful and toxic world, our physical and mental systems accumulate toxins causing deterioration in bodily functioning. This eventually weakens our systems, which opens the door for chronic, degenerative, and non-specific diseases to develop. These can evolve into serious specific diseases, ultimately damaging an individual’s health and wellness. Panchakarma can help by reversing these negative effects of daily living. It can restore your natural state of health and wellness by cleansing your body of toxins, bringing balance into your system and improving bodily function. It can also help you sustain this process by making positive changes in lifestyle. The Panchakarma therapeutic process appears quite simple in its application. However, its effects are powerful and long-lasting. Panchakarma is a unique, natural, holistic, health-giving series of therapeutic treatments that cleanse the body’s deep tissues of toxins, open the subtle channels, bring life-enhancing energy thereby increasing vitality, inner peace, confidence and well-being.
The three stages of Panchakarma therapy. Panchakarma is always performed in three stages Purva Karma (pre-treatment), Pradhana Karma (primary treatment) and Paschat Karma (post-treatment). The patient who opts for any one of the five therapies has invariably to undergo all the three stages. Snehana (oleation / oil therapy) and Swedana (sudation) are the two Purva Karma procedures. Snehana (internal and external oleation) loosens the Amam stuck in various sites of the body and Swedana dilates the channels to facilitate its movement towards the Koshta (alimentary canal). The Amam that reaches the Koshta is eliminated during the Pradhana Karma (primary treatment). Diet regimens, restricted bodily exertion, and the intake of health-promoting drugs come under the Paschat Karma (post-treatment). Panchakarma is a purifying therapy to enhance the metabolic process through food and herbal medicines. It is used in deep rooted chronic disease as well as seasonal imbalance of tridoshas. This medical condition involves chronic inflammation of the spine and sacroiliac joints resulting in pain, stiffness, fatigue and possibly, involvement of several joints. Ankylosing spondylitis is believed to be influenced by genetics, environmental factors and disturbed immunity. When the auto immune aspect is predominant, affected individuals may have a complete fusion of the backbone and may also report involvement of other organs like the eyes, heart, lungs, and kidneys. The modern management of this condition includes the use of painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids, and immune-suppressant drugs. Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Ankylosing Spondylitis Ayurvedic herbal treatment for ankylosing spondylitis involves the use of anti-inflammatory medicines to treat the chronic inflammatory process in the vertebrae as well as the sacroiliac joints. These medicines gradually reduce the inflammation and heal the vertebrae as well as the intervertebral joints, so that the backbone reverts back to normal or near normal. These results are obtained without any evidence of major side-effects, even with long-term use of Ayurvedic herbal medicines. Localized treatment for the backbone is also utilised along with oral medication. Local treatment is in the form of herbal ointments and medicated oils which can be applied, after which hot fomentation is given to the backbone and the sacroiliac joints. Combined oral and local treatments provide quick relief from pain and stiffness. In addition to the above treatment, Ayurvedic herbal medicines are also given to provide immunomodulation in the affected individual, so that the immune process in the body starts helping the body rather than fighting against it. This treatment not only reduces the symptoms quickly, but it also helps in curing the disease completely, as well as preventing involvement of internal organs. Ayurvedic Panch Karma treatment needs to be given for about four to six months in patients affected with ankylosing spondylitis, depending upon the severity of the condition. Almost all patients who take regular treatment get cured from this condition. Individuals who have pronounced fusion of the vertebrae can also benefit from treatment considerably. Ayurvedic herbal treatment thus has a significant contribution in the management and treatment of ankylosing spondylitis.
